Inspiring the Next Generation on Women in Engineering Day

We were delighted to host our Women in Engineering Day at Didcot Girls' School, where we spent the day with Year 10 and Year 11 students exploring the exciting opportunities that engineering has to offer.

The event was designed to challenge perceptions, inspire confidence and encourage more young women to consider engineering as a future career. Throughout the day, students took part in a range of interactive STEM activities that tested their creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills, while demonstrating how engineering impacts the world around us every day.

A highlight of the day was hearing directly from a female engineering apprentice from Lucy Electric, who shared her personal journey into the industry. She spoke about her experiences as an apprentice, what a typical day looks like, the projects she has worked on, and the opportunities engineering has given her. Her honest insights helped students see that there are many different routes into engineering and that apprenticeships can provide an excellent pathway into a rewarding career.

Alongside the practical activities, students also had the opportunity to ask questions about careers in engineering, apprenticeships and life in the workplace. These conversations provided valuable insight into the wide variety of roles available within the industry and helped break down common misconceptions about engineering careers.

It was fantastic to see so much enthusiasm, curiosity and engagement from the students throughout the day. Their willingness to get involved, work collaboratively and ask thoughtful questions made the event a great success.

At The Engineering Trust, we are committed to inspiring more young people to explore careers in engineering and manufacturing while helping to create a more diverse and inclusive future workforce. Events like Women in Engineering Day play an important role in showing students that engineering is for everyone, regardless of background or gender.

A huge thank you to Didcot Girls' School for welcoming us and to our apprentice from Lucy Electric for sharing her inspiring story. We hope the day has encouraged the students to think differently about engineering and the exciting opportunities that await them in the future.

We look forward to returning to schools across the region to continue inspiring the next generation of engineers.
