Vacancy description

Working in the packaging industry this apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to gain experience in a commercial setting. Further career development is available at the end of the apprenticeship, allowing you to have an input in developing the metal packaging of the future and have the opportunity to travel to other Crown locations throughout the world.

The role of the apprentice is to train alongside the Research and Development Team and support their activities as you gain the necessary experience. The opportunity is very varied and you will report to the manager of the department. The key responsibilities for the apprentice are to follow the four year training programme, fine tuning mechanical skills such as turning and machining in order to produce parts for projects.

Day to day tasks include:

  • Grind and reshape cutting tools as required
  • Working safely on a range of Lathes which operate within the  Manufacturing Services machine shop
  • Producing simple component parts using the full applications of the machine as required
  • Working safely on a range of milling machines within the  Manufacturing Services machine shop producing simple component parts using the full applications of the machine as required
  • Undertake a range of precision grinding technique.
  • Mounting, truing and dressing grinding wheels to achieve a range of finishes to a range of different materials
  • Ability to undertake a range of grinding techniques to include:- surface grinding plus external and internal cylindrical.
  • An understanding of the techniques of  'Tungsten Inert Gas' welding, where and when it would be used.
  • An understanding of the techniques of  'Manual Inert Gas' welding, where and when it would be used.
  • An understanding of the techniques of  'Manual Metal Arc' welding, where and when it would be used.
  • An understanding of the techniques of  ‘Gas Welding’, where and when it would be used.
  • An understanding in the fundamentals of standards, traceability, calibration drawing symbols and geometrical tolerances used within engineering
  • Produce basic engineering drawings for use by manufacturing services using the CAD stations within the department.
  • Produce work using a range of methods of production e.g. machining, fitting, electrical, electronic etc.
  • Produce simple designs as required to suit modifications to existing equipment/machines working from the basic principles of the desired improvement required for the project.

Qualifications required

Minimum of 5 GCSE's or equivalents Grade A-C (Grade B (Grade 6) or above in maths.   English and a science subjects are essential.

Salary structure to reflect the technical nature of the post. Support to complete further professional qualifications including university. Leads to Technicians role

Things to consider

This apprenticeship involves a large amount of study and homework to be completed alongside the practical aspects of the training. You will receive guidance and support from the Management Team and regular performance reviews ensure ongoing personal development is structured.
